Assignment 5A Utopia Wiki Pages

Page history last edited by Andrea Brownstein 15 years, 7 months ago

Due Friday September 12

Make wiki pages about Sir Thomas More’s Utopia

= Link your pages to the Utopia page on the wiki.

= While the easiest way to marshal material is to excerpt it from the web, writing the material yourself, based in books, articles and other non-electronic sources is the way of academic, intellectual life. Pursue knowledge through McCulloch Library’s many resources. In addition, your text offers additional reading that can help us understand the text.

= At a minimum, you need to help your classmates understand, recognize or know the following:

= Who was Sir Thomas More? In what part of his life was Utopia written? Why might that matter? Check out G.R. Elton, “The Real Thomas More?” (p. 195) in the Norton edition we are using—after you have learned the outlines of More’s life.

= Who was Erasmus? What was his connection to More?

= Who were the Humanists? What did they believe? Why is this important? What connection do they have to this book?

What else can you contribute to the conversation?

= What else does the web offer?

= How was Humanism different from the beliefs of the world that came before it?

= What questions can you pose that will help us understand the ideas of this book and their relevance to us?

= Check out R.W. Chambers, “Utopia and the Problems of 1516” (p. 142) in the Norton edition we are using.
