First Response to More’s Utopia

· Your paper will have two parts. The first responds to More’s commentary on 16th century Britain; the second asks for your ideas about human nature. No need to

· The subtitle of More’s Utopia is “A Truly Golden Handbook,” suggesting that the reader will find some guidance within. Book I identifies the problems 16th century society struggled with. What are they? Which of these do we still  wrestle with in the 21st century? What new problems do we need to address?

· By implication, More asks the reader to consider these two questions:

· What good can an honorable (hu)man do in a society where most people are concerned with power?

· Shakespeare said that sometimes people must choose to “do a little harm to accomplish a greater good.” How can an honorable human know when the little harm outweighs the potential for good?

The answers to these questions are complex; clearly we are not in a position to formulate a response now. However, we can begin by examining our assumptions about the world and our place in it.

· Do you think people can act selflessly, for the benefit of those they are not related to? Describe two incidents that have lead you to believe so.
