TEACHING AND LEARNING
As we have observed in class, learning is intimately connected to teaching. Indeed, many would argue that they are two sides of the same coin. The purposes of education are to promote civic progress and maximize the possibility that individuals will live their lives well. Higher Order Thinking Skills help people learn how to live together and to think through complex problems.
One example of a progressive school is A.S. Neill's Summerhill. Established in 1921, this school encourages joy in learning and self-discipline in life. For an introduction to his ideas, read this link: Summerhill School. For a discussion of the Humanist quality of Summerhill, follow this link: http://www.iheu.org/node/2286.
