Hawthorne identified his book as a romance—and clearly intended his readers to understand the novel in its several meanings: the pastoral, natural goodness of Romanticism, the specific genre of chivalric adventure, and the emotional entanglements of human relationships.

What did the members of Blithedale (Brook Farm) want in their society? What did they accomplish? Where did they fail? In how many ways does the idea of romance figure into the founding and the ending of the group?
